The Bigotry That Remains, Part Ii

...But there exists a much broader hate, half the species, you see, do not rate. I’m talking, of course, about the men, how we’re seen as less next to women, that our basic masculinity is portrayed as criminality, save for working women on the rise, it’s okay for girls to act like guys. The TV and the cinema screens portray men as fools, or sexists mean, like we would be helpless without girls… Even though we built this friggin’ world. in the courts we get the rawer deal, and the consequences are quite real. Man sleeps with a student, twenty years, a woman does it, probation and tears… We can be accused at any time of abuse and acts truly malign, and even if there’s no evidence we still get punished, that makes no sense! Near half of domestic battering is done by women fond of punching, knowing that we can never hit back, that most forms of real recourse we lack. Yet we’re still the ones sent off to die, on our taxes government relies since we’re still doing most of the work, and for all this we get cast as jerks? We’re told to know the feminist cause, when in truth they should act more like us, so there would be rationality and some place for commonality. But all such thoughts seem like a fools hope, politicos love the women’s vote, in society man-hate ingrained, allows this bigotry to remain. The most pernicious is jealousy of the people who work and succeed, the ones who go out and innovate get saddled with socialistic hate. Be it a newly minted billionaire, or a working fellow who takes care, they get slurred as monsters made of greed, and stolen from with loud claims of ‘need.’ Some look at them and they cry out theft, but I’ve seen no entrepreneur yet who got rich by taking things by force from the pockets the struggling poor, never seen then force these folks to buy what they’re selling in their stores inside, since in this county commerce is choice, that’s a sticking point you can’t avoid. But this fact is lost on simple finds, and the corrupt politicians find it’s easier to get four more years if you lie and saw what they want to hear. Now people go out and they attack the folks who pay their hand-outs through tax, and invent the tech that we live on, and keep going until it’s all gone. It’s the real plague hurting out nation, this cruel merit discrimination, to hurt the productive is insane, yet it’s a bigotry that remains.

A mind-riveting poem, Mr. Welch. Tho' I have mixed feelings on a variety of issues creatively cast in this passionate poem, I viscerally feel your ink disgust. Very thought-provoking poetry! Love and more love always.

I agree with Saunders. Well almost all cases of child abuse and rape (esp in Asia) are done by men and usually children & women are the victims. That's why girls' suicide rate is higher in this part of the world, for they usually kill themselves after getting raped cz of shame and bcz of the fact that society won't accept them anymore. Domestic violence is also very common in Asia, women are beaten, tortured even burnt, (

I agree regarding Asia, especially in the Muslim world, but this poem focuses on America. Here the male suicide rate is much higher then women, and the majority of abuse on children is done by women. Some studies point out that mothers here are violent towards boys at twice the rate they are to girls.

not to forget acid cases when a girl refuse to marry a man. And you know every woman at some point in her life wish to have been born a boy bcz of the injustices and problems women are facing, they are looked down upon by many, they are not regarded as equals, even they are given low wages compared to men.

'Four more years' for the pols -- Isn't that, indeed, what matters for those folks? And we, the chumbalones, just keep getting stiffed... The way of the world. Great write and congrats on POTD! :) Gershon

As for child abuse, these stats do not mean that women are more likely to abuse children. We must take into account that women are more often caregivers. Over 90 percent of single parent homes are female. Men are more likely to physically abuse. If a mother neglects her child by not sending them to school, that is one count of abuse. A man that physically injures or molests his child will be counted the same statistically. As someone who studied this in college, I know you have to break it down.

Yes, you are correct about Male reports of abuse, but here are the BIG differences: In the US, 1 in 7 women are physically injured by a partner in their lifetime and 1 in 25 men are physically injured, 1 in 10 women are raped by a partner, 1 in 5 women will be raped in their lifetime, women are more than twice as likely to be stalked by a partner, and in 94 percent of all partner-related murder suicides, the female is the victim.

Well David it's unfortunate that you seem to hate women so much. I was raised to respect women and treat them as equals. I hope that nobody takes what this guy is saying as fact here in the U.S. This is just more hate and unfortunately people like this are entitled to their opinion because of our freedom of speech.

As a woman who grew up in a home with domestic violence, I find your poem offensive and untrue. Statistically, men are more violent and kill their wives/girlfriends more often...FACT! . I know women can be abusive, obviously, but the idea that in 50% of all domestic violence cases women are the aggressors is ABSURD! Let's face it, women are usually physically weaker like my mom who is 5'2" and never weighed more than 120 lbs. You should check your stats. I can't believe this is POTD.

Not 50 %, but upwards of 43%. And the vast majority of physical abuse of children is perpetrated by women. I am sorry for what your suffered as a child, but these are facts too.

I don’t feel that way at all. I respect my husband for all the hard work he has done in the past before we retired. I too worked hard since I was 16 years old until I retired the same time my husband did. I remember when I was younger and I went to buy a car they would not even let me without my husband and his credit. Even though with my ex-husband, I was the one with the good credit! I believe that we should be treated as equals when we are in the working force, it certainly is not that way in America. Women still make much less money than men doing the same type of work. You’re entitled to your opinions and I respect that, however I don’t feel it is fair to clump us all together saying that all women feel that way about men. I certainly don’t.

(2) If men are unfairly portrayed on TV or cinema as fools or sexist, we have the right to change the channel or see a different movie. I have never felt that my masculinity has been portrayed as criminality, nor that I am working harder than my female co-workers, some in supervisory positions who work much harder than I. It seems you are interested in a fairer and more just society. I'm just not sure the tone of this poem encourages people to join together to build that better society. ~ John

I barely watch TV anymore because of this. Almost all of the media portrays men as either dunces or psychopaths, with very little middle ground. And if you can't see the constant demonziation of 'toxic' masculinity in the greater culture, then you're not paying attention (Not that I would blame you, so much trash these days...) As for work, I'm sure there are countless anecdotes to the contrary, but the general trends show men carrying the lion's share of productivity.

(1) It's hard to know how to respond to this POTD. Is it irony? Hyperbole? I read part I for some context and it appears that your real protest is against the PC nature of our age that appears to suppress the voices of those who have historically had the voice in western society: white males. In that narrow sense, I agree - there should be no suppression of voice based on race or sex. But I find it hard to agree with statements such as: men "do not rate", or "are seen as less next to women".

And given how boys are treated in schools, and men are traded in courts, I think it's very evident that society places less value on men. Women are valued simply for being female, whereas men, young men especially, have to repeatedly prove themselves for any sort of attention. We're the expendable sex, and it's remarkably sexist.

If PC was at all interested in freedom, it wouldn't be going out of it's way to silence anybody's voices, yet it does. You don't correct pass mistakes by visiting those mistakes on new sets of people. You stop the mistakes. Demonizing a new group as past groups once were just ensures you create new conflict that will make your future as bloody as the past.

Thank you, John. Why would PS choose this nonsense to be POTD? I am offended by it.
