The Beat

One comfort mankind would repeat
Is hearing our mother's heart beat
Though stars abound
No other sound
Reminds us how life can be sweet

A very sweet limerick. Yes, the mother's heartbeat is the only sound a baby hears as long as it rests in the comfort of the mother's womb . Then all of a sudden, it is thrown into a cacophony of sounds. May be, that's why it cries!

They usually don't cry until they are spanked, perhaps because they are in shock after being ejected from a cozy, warm place into a frigid room?

I was reminded how quickly a newborn calms down after being placed on its mother's chest where it can feel her heart beat again.
