The Arrival of 1960's Television

The furniture was rearranged, to make sure there was space, and suddenly the radiogram, had moved to second place. Now we would have Thunderbirds, Star Trek and man on the moon, Tomorrow’s World had landed, right there in the living room. And no-one in the family, could really disagree, with the magic or excitement, of our black and white TV. There was a note of caution though, when mum to our surprise, said, “don’t complain to me, if you end up with square eyes…”.

Nice nostalgia in this poem, Martin. Growing up in Canada, we often had the best of American and British TV programs to watch. I vividly remember Star Trek and Thunderbirds (in Supermarionation!) and, of course, the greatest British comedy and drama: Monty Python, Benny Hill, Upstairs Downstairs, The Avengers. Ah, the memories! Take care, Jim.

Absolutely, Jim. Dated now maybe but some of these shows were cutting edge & essential viewing back in the day. Take care, Martin.

I used a bit of artistic licence here. Growing up during the 1960's, the space race and science fiction fascinated me and it was a massive deal whether or not you had a television. Once your family decided to purchase a set, there was a sense of excitement about being able to watch Star Trek, Thunderbirds and much more besides. As with everything though, there was always a reality check from Mum or Dad...
