The Annual Thanksgiving Feast
Thanksgiving is the time for us to give
a thought or two about life and reflect
on blessings great allowing us to live,
a special day for thanks— to introspect.
But my attention’s drawn another way,
as food takes center stage again this year,
with recipes and dishes that display
excess amidst a festive atmosphere.
We work all day creating surplus food.
To stuff our stomachs seems to be the aim,
beyond capacity as if its good.
To feast and swill again, it seems a shame.
Next year I’ll stop, be different from times past,
and give this day a tribute with a fast.
