That's All For Now

Pregnant river banks overflow their Illinois limits
Bulging at the middle to finish in a rush of floods
Sweeping houses and tumbling cars away in minutes
Families inside implode, drown, down to their feet
Never to be found as they sink beyond sleep
Still the sky openly cries with more rain to come
A baby floats by in a basket made of straw
That’s all

A powerful, unsettling free-verse scene in which the swollen river becomes almost bodily and catastrophic. The escalating images of floodwater, loss, and relentless rain create a grim momentum, made especially haunting by the fragile basket-borne baby and the abrupt, devastating final line.
