That Evening Star

That evening star shining bright above, Never wavering, my compass guide, Assisting me through a darkening night When I wavered in my journey north Seeking a special place in life’s schema After my affairs were in order, blessed, I was to make my way home repairing, Restoring what once was, I had missed While beggaring about aimless and lost, That evening star was always shining Even when I could not see its glimmer, Most likely, not wanting its direction Floundering as I was, far from serenity, Seldom aware that I was missing, adrift In a careless and cruel world caring not Until near bottom I looked up and saw The future I could call my own, if only I, If only I, could begin again with you … That evening star shining bright above Never wavering, never giving up on me.

The loyalty of that Star Milton always there for you, for some reason I thought the star to be your lovely wife. Only because the Star was special and you hinted" IF I could only begin again with you never wavering or giving up on me." Just a thought...

Michael, this whole poem is a metaphor on the concept that one has to hit bottom before one can recover from addiction. It is not personal, but, the idea came to me while observing the North Star in the sky while driving home the other night from my road trip. I tried to rhyme it, but I could not and had to settle for free verse. I'm glad you liked it.
