Temporarily Contemporary
All that is new and surrounds us today,
the contemporary, the modern, the brash avant-garde,
pervasive in culture, in morals and art,
when meant to advance, too often retard.
So anxious to differ from what's always been,
charging forth when we should be careful and wary -
we take nothing good from the past to mix in,
all joined in what will only be buried.
That which is modern will soon have a tag,
retro art, retro sport, retro music and fashion.
All that is cool and is hip and is "with it"
will be pushed to the past to pursue a new passion.
Too often our efforts just to be new
forget that the goal should be to be better,
derived from experience and history we've learned
that the crumbs of the failed are left to the debtor.
