Taps Screams Out

The drumroll, too heavy for May
    rumbles on ... abruptly halts
  Cadets at attention rigidly
    silently, duty-bound ...

In measured tones, a psalm floats on
a breeze made limp by heat
Taps screams out, the flag is lowered
to its echoes, a box sinks down...

Cadets as still as statues still
'til cadence soft of drums resumes
Their comrade now interred for aye
    eyelids lowered, red the sky

The way soldiers bid farewell to a comrade is so touching and majestic. You have captured the scene in all its melancholic intensity and solemn gravity.

Psalms float. That's what I wrote.

This a compelling verse. Unnecessary wars cause hearts to break in so many unnecessary ways. I could picture this scene very vividly. Gershon, an excellent compassionate verse. Take care, Shirley
