Take Me Home

Take me home, oh take me home to stay
To a weary heart some comfort bring
Let me rest , I long for yesterday...

Years have past , the sky is turning gray
For me soon the bells of death will ring
Take me home, oh take me home to stay...

In my youth's folly I went away
Now to the past my thoughts do cling
Let me rest, I long for yesterday...

I thought to conquer the world one day
But instead I felt the serpent's sting
Take me home, oh take me home to stay...

Just let me smell life's old bouquet
And remember old songs to sing
Let me rest, I long for yesterday...

I see the light of home so far away
And the thrush upon its silent wing
Take me home, oh take me home to stay
Let me rest, I long for yesterday.

Barbara, have you seen all the winners yet? I am astounded by the beauties I am reading one by one down the list. Most of them have death or coming death as their theme. Villanelles are great tools for writing beautifully on death. Excellent poem, and a well deserved win. Congrats.

wow, Barbara. this is SO fine, and I have to tell you. I have a rondeau using very similar words (take me home or take me back,I can't remember now) and the theme is like yours here. I think we both enjoy writing on this theme. I love it!

Looks like you are feeling introspective this evening, dear LNC. The longing for yesterdays that you express so eloquently here is something to which I can relate. Our time here is limited and our youths are often foolishly spent, but as we get older we learn to appreciate each new day a little more. Chin up, my friend. You have two little babies to help raise. Many wonderful days remain ahead. Excellent use of the villanelle form! Wishing you success in the contest. Love, Carolyn
