Tables Turned

No eye could bear to meet the beggar’s gaze ;
A chasm lay between his world and theirs.
Vicarious, sham empathy might raise
Some paltry coins or hollow, barren prayers.

Whilst mockery would be his daily bread
Smug opulence passed by with callous stride,
Determined to leave every plea unread
And anxious to exult in plenty’s pride.

The affluent adjust their silken ties,
And homes with lavish luxuries adorn,
Whereas the impetus for this wretch lies
In having strength to greet another morn.

The irony of fate had played its part,
For he, like them was once stone cold of heart.

I love the way the tables turned and this beggar could relate to those he'd ignored in the past, Wendy. This happens sometimes in life and we regard it as poetic justice. Excellent writing! Congratulations on your win. Hugs, Carolyn

This was so cool. I love the storyline in this and it is so true. Those who run through the day thinking they are better are far worse off than those who happily except things as they are. Nicely done Wendy.

Your words seemed to flow effortlessly and the imagery created an atmosphere of understanding, that brought the whole scene to life in my mind. The emotions cling to this piece like a second skin, taking the reader confidentially into your thoughts. Well done, Emile.
