Notes About The Poem

Sweet Surrender

Addiction began as recreational adventure
Meandered into misdemeanor or slow suicide
Incorrectly blamed substance as offender
Neither love nor deep down agony contender
Sickness of mind, body and soul collide

Many experience a moment of clarification
Or honest evaluation enough to recover on
Relapse a symptom not a failure situation
Willingness is a key recovery indication
Sweet surrender - paradoxical phenomenon

A very deep and and seemingly personal write Susan. It is a shame what we sometimes have to put ourselves through before we discover how strong and exceptional we are. Sadly, some of us never learn. I have a close relative who is a great person but dying from smoking and alcoholism.

Thank you! Yes very sad. Will pray. If it was just about learning our lesson would be many many more recovering.

Intriguing rhyming in the second stanza, in concert with the message. Best of luck in the contest! :)

Love your sweet surrender, to something far better and less addictive than alcohol. Some walk away gradually and I've known some who quit cold turkey and never regressed. Good piece, Susan.

Some roads are to be avoided at all cost...once walked price keeps going up...'til life is the payment...a walk back is like the cross... Nice one...
