Swansong
SWANSONG
The greatest performance of my life,
I gave at that audition.
I’d studied the role for days on end,
Perfecting my rendition.
I’d rehearsed the scene a hundred times,
Studying each inflection
And, as I stood upon the stage,
I knew I’d reached perfection.
I stood there in the spotlight
And delivered my very best.
The director up there in row F
Was sure to be impressed..
When I’d finished he thanked me
For coming along today,
But he said I wasn’t quite right
For that particular play.
In fact, he told me frankly,
It was his firm impression,
That, to make a decent living,
I was in the wrong profession.
I thanked him for his sage advice
And made my exit fast.
The greatest performance of my life
Had proved to be my last.
