Suspended In Surprise
SUSPENDED IN SURPRISE
wrapped in legs and arms,
sandwiched between two grandsons.
sheets in disarray would not impede
the octopus hold, attempt to halt
their impending flight home.
a little hand in mine, our feet planted
on pavement. i try to disengage,
say goodbye.
“where are you going?”
those little eyes suspended in surprise
as he finds out we have two different paths.
reluctantly his fingers uncurl.
his brother jumps up, holding me tight.
“when will you come to visit us?”
a heavy sag to the car as i divide my heart.
i nap. i dream. i feel his squeeze.
flight delayed til morning light. my son frowns
but his sons squeal with delight
for more happy hours with grandma.
