Susan, Susan

After Blake

Susan, Susan, shining bright
like a candle in the night.
Radiant beauty, flickering pain,
come to grace my life again.

Eternal sunrise of your eyes,
smiles to make the angels wise;
kissed with torment, bathed in grace,
revelations of your face.

Constant brilliance, steady heart,
knowing gaze beyond all art;
brightest smile and girlish glance,
light and music come to dance.

What immortal spirit there
catches wonder everywhere?
Where the birthplace, what the sound,
when did heaven kiss the ground?

And when form by magic moves
all the angels' learning proves
visions captured in a smile
live with us a perfect while.

Take the sunlight, take the earth,
tell us what a lifetime's worth.
Never in the reach of time
let us lose this grace of thine.

Susan, Susan, shining bright
like a candle in the night.
Radiant beauty, flickering pain,
come to grace my life again.
