Sunlight and Shadows
At first glance, the sky felt close.
The air held still, like it was waiting.
You stood where the horizon broke.
Soft mornings, quiet beginnings.
Light spilling through open space.
Everything felt possible.
Feathers caught in your sleeves,
wind threading through your voice,
always reaching upward.
Stone beneath my feet,
roots tightening with every step.
I never learned to lift.
You spoke of distance,
of leaving the ground behind.
I counted what could be held.
Maps drawn in opposite directions,
yours without borders,
mine folding back on itself.
A restless sky,
a patient earth.
Neither willing to change.
Your shadow grew smaller,
mine stayed where it began.
We called that balance.
Always too soon to stay,
always too late to follow.
We kept missing the same moment.
Hands almost meeting,
then pulled by different forces.
Something unseen deciding.
You with wings half-open,
me with weight in my chest.
We tried anyway.
The wind answered you,
the ground answered me.
Neither answered us.
So you rose a little higher,
and I stayed where things remain.
We named it understanding.
No anger, no breaking.
Just distance settling in.
Quiet as it came.
Gravity held me steady,
your wings refused the stillness —
we were never meant to stay.
