Notes About The Poem

Summer Sky Tableau

The Horse Nebula
rises from flames, forged
from Milky Way core.
Saturn flanks his right,
Jupiter his left --
Gods girded for war.

Lightning bolts whistle
above the red glare
for all to beware.
Dark stallion ascends,
riderless, regal,
through the rarified air.

Photo taken by the author at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, July 29, 2019, showing Saturn, Jupiter, the Milky Way core, and Southern Delta Aquarid meteors.

Alex, thanks for the visit and kind comment. The dark nebula is actually called "the Horse Nebula." A magnificent sight. Check it out if you can find dark skies in, say July or August. ~Eric

It really does look and feel the way you've described it, Eric! Outstanding! ... Just as at the Red Sea, even: 'The Lord is a Man of War; the Lord is His Name.' ... Come to think of it, that must be how the owner of the great race-horse, 'Man o' War' named him. Congratulations on your win in the contest. Best wishes, Gershon

The photo does seem to show some meteor or what my father called shooting stars. I have only seen two of those in my life but I don't go outside at night much. I am a day person mostly. I like your work. Reads like a good contender to me for the contest. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara

Thanks, Sara. Even if you are not a night owl, hope you go out some time to see a good meteor shower. They can be amazing and no special equipment or knowledge needed.

Thanks, Milton. I appreciate the visit and comments. I just deleted the second verse. I have vivid memories of my visit to Blackwater. The sky is just awesome there.
