It was the summer before my last year of college My ex dumped me a week before finals It’s going to be a long boring summer, maybe I’ll be surprised I will try to make it a time of self-care and reflection I was invited to a party at my friend’s summer cottage A beautiful place, where the sky drifts into the sea A Victorian mansion on the beach with a crashing surf It will be fun with lots of friends and new people to meet I packed my bags and ventured out for my day trip I decided to stop to get some wine coolers and chips At the store I bumped into someone at the cooler I embarrassedly turned to apologize as he caught my breath He was beautiful with bronzed muscular arms and blond hair His eyes were sparkling blue, and his smile was invitingly warm I was thinking that I could get lost in the mist of your eyes He smelled like a mixture of fresh summer rain and woodsy spice I finally made it to the summer cottage, the party had already started I relaxed with some friends over drinks and hors d’oeuvres Then I saw him, the man from the store, he saw me and smiled My stomach started to flutter and as I knew I wanted him He came to me and gave me a hug, and we laughed about the store We talked and laughed for hours until we started to kiss My head felt intoxicated by his woodsy smell As I whispered, “burn me with your love poison” The next day I awoke to the sound of crashing waves and thunder The bed was empty, but his scent lingered on as I looked at his pillow There was a little note left for me with a red rose, his phone number and a key It said come join me tonight for a rendezvous as I am now leashed to your dusk
