Tired parents and their children pack their things
cramming buckets, balls and spades into the car
heading back home with souvenirs they bring
some postcards and a starfish in a jar.
On cue the tide comes in, with gulls in tow
erasing traces of the summer fun
with every wave sandcastles slowly go,
shadows diminish with the setting sun .
In silence, thoughts turn to the months ahead,
new school or back again to daily grind
the rush to dress the kids and get them fed,
all thoughts of that long summer left behind.
Ship's bell swings in the wind beside the pier
across deserted beach, sounds the all clear.
