Such a Leaf as This

A simple leaf unfurled himself one spring
His fledgling face beholding sun-kissed sky
Where each cloud traced a new imagining
And bore aloft his dreams to one day fly
In time he left behind such childish ways
And focused on his purpose to the tree
To harvest and consume his brightest days
And so impress the jade-clad bourgeoisie
With time he found his verdant color fade
As shriveled lines subverted youthful cast
And even dreams of flight now felt betrayed
By seeing how that day would be his last

I think about this leaf and reminisce
For what am I but such a leaf as this

OKAY, last line is a killer as in it brought the whole thing home with a bow on it. From what I've read of your work thus far, you are an excellent 'finisher.' CayCay

Jesse, your beautiful poem explores a leaf's childhood innocence and soaring fantasies. After maturing, the leaf serves the tree and enjoys others' adoration. The leaf loses its brilliance and faces death, leaving ambitions and aspirations. The leaf's journey and human experience are compared in the last words to life's transience. The poem explores development, change, and time. It nicely depicts the journey from young ambition to mature purpose and acceptance of life's brevity. The finale invites readers to think on their lives and the transience of life, highlighting the relationship between nature and people.

You surely wrote this for the contest. A leaf. I enjoyed the imagery very much and was blown away by the last two lines. Impressive writing. I'm still carving, tweaking and picking at my draft and think I finally understand iambic. TRULY good. CayCay
