Street Children on an Alley

With night fall, the tiny scraps of humanity
congregated in the alley with stories of day’s adventures
their laughter creating waves in the silent dark.
Barefoot they wandered through scorching tarmac roads
with soiled clothes and hunger in their bellies.

As the cold winds swept past their bare faces
they slid into sleep’s embrace curling in some dark corner.
Somehow this view left me wonder if they will wake up
with the kiss of dawn to see another day’s fruitless platter
or will they bloom like wild weeds from the stony cracks!

Congratulations , Valsa, on your high win in this contest with a lovely poem painting the plight of street children on an alley at night. At times they may be found under the bridge, to shelter from cold winds. This may not be a scene particular to India, but may also be prevailing in some other countries. Despite government efforts to deal with it, is to eliminate it. Wishing you a bright start of the coming new week.

I feel so bad for the street people. Especially the ones with children to provide for. Well done my friend. God Bless, JB

This may be a sad scene in slums. But the situation is improving. Hopefully we would not see such scenarios in future. Great to bring this to notice.

Thank you Valsa, for penning this heart wrenching poem. May God protect the precious little children and get them to safe havens to grow up in peace. This is so very sad.

Knowing well the country where you live, I can but pity how many die destitute and from sickness. A sad situation. Yet well written.
