Notes About The Poem

Written 17 May 2026 for Actualisation of Affection Poetry Contest sponsored by Ink Empress

Storm of Roses

two rose bushes
stretching side by side
exchanged sweet messages
at start of the spring of soft shine
bloomed at their best
by mid of the spell
kissed in sweet embrace
by close of the season
with their shining petals
blown by the mild breeze
a passionate fervour
a hot luxuriant savour
on edge of ecstasy

with summer scorching sun
the sky soon suddenly switched to grey
 followed by a thunderous rage
wild, woeful winds wafting
a violent storm of roses
not by coming to blows
but by exchange of words
fiery, howling, vehement
as lightning and thunder

petals, crimson as old wounds
fuchsia like flushed cheeks
scarlet, a furious blush
rained down, swirling and twirling
caught in unseen currents
a dizzying carousel
of velvet softness
each drifting descent
a whispered reproach
a broken vow

on the parched earth
the petals lay
 a riot of colours
a sacrifice, a shroud
a sad memory
of sweet shining days
of moments of joy
episodes of smiles
of delicious ecstasy
 now turned to pitiful squalor

the air thickened
with their perfume
sweet and cloying
once an invitation
now a weight
pressing down
a memory of warmth
turned to insistent annoyance

 I stood dumbfounded
drenched in their essence
a silent witness
 to this storm of roses
of fragile fiery flame
this unwanted, unwished
wanton self-destruction
 wondering how the heart
can hold so much grudge
so much unfurling
 how the heat of anger
can turn two loving roses
to sudden swirling storms.

Wow... great poem! First l thought of choosing this option. I wrote a few lines, but soon l felt as if stuck in a blind alley. So l gave up and changed into an easier option. I feel those who have chosen this are indeed daring. Love the third stanza the most. Congratulations friend on your win.

Excellent write, Krishnanand! Something of beauty that becomes a whirlwind, not of romance but bitterness and hatred, annoyance… verse 2 last line, change to “lightning”
