Stolen Childhood
That night, they called me
And said I was ready
Ready for what?
Morning came, they took my school uniform
And gave me wrappers
They traded my school bags and books
To bridal beads and a veil
And said I am to be a bride
But my dolls are still scattered on the floor
My laughter still echoed in the rain
They dressed me in promises
Too heavy for my shoulders
And told me love was obedience
And obedience was womanhood
I wanted to play,
To learn...
To grow...
Instead, they grew me into a wife
How will I go from playing mummy and daddy
To becoming the mummy ?
Tell them.....
They traded my tomorrow
For customs too old to question
Tell them
A child's hands
Were never made
To carry the weight of a wedding band .
