clash of egos, differences of perspectives stalls fluidity. a partnership dissolves ideas once a mountain stream flowing seamlessly, now a trickle; static electricity. synergy, at rest; in a state of stagnation. they've assumed the position of chess pieces from which no further move. is possible.

I suppose in chess, you can nudge the board. Sadly, in couple land, someone has to give way, otherwise there's hell to pay.

In chess I hate that happening, all that effort for no result, but in love, well sometimes to be at loggerheads doesn't necessarily mean the end. When two minds come together in a stalemate it only takes one to give a little. So sad as in your superbly worded poem, the end is declared.
