St Patrick's Day Parades

Seventeenth of March is St Patrick’s Day
Great day for the Irish I can honestly say
Paddies' the world over will want to be seen
Wearing Leprechaun hats and a sprig of green.

Loud colourful parades up and down the lands
Drums, tin whistles and the skirl of pipe bands
Sample some Guinness or a glass of potcheen
Be the best street party you've ever seen.

But if you're not Irish still join in the fun
St Patrick’s day parades are for everyone
But make sure you go, you'll enjoy the craic
And I guarantee that next year you'll be back

It happens once a year so come and have a ball
A very happy St Patrick's day to one and all.

Written 16/02/2019.

Poitin anglicized as Potcheen
( Irish moonshine )
                  ~
Sprig of green is the shamrock associated
With St Patrick who used it to explain the blessed trinity, God the father, son and holy spirit.

                    ~

The craic is news, gossip, enjoyable conversation and having fun.

A rollicking description of the parade, my friend. You certainly don't have to be Irish to love this one. It's a FAVE for me! (And congrats on your win in the contest). Best wishes, Gershon

Thanks Gershon, what I've noticed over time is other religions' and cultures joining in, that's how life should be all the time showing love and respect for one another. Tom.

Congratulations Tom for your well-deserved win for this very witty and descriptive write about the St Pat's parade. Thx for your kind comments re my win. Yep I have some Irish blood. I traced back & our family began in North England/South Scotland, went to Ireland, got booted out of there & ended up landing in N Carolina! Best to you - Bob

I love the upbeat quality of your poem, Tom, especially the way you focused on the parades. We have them here too, but locally other nationalities are now participating with tributes to their nations as well. There were some wonderful entries in this category. Congratulations on your second-place win! Best wishes, Carolyn

So much fun! You've put me in the spirit. I only claim Irish through my husband and children. My husband being both Portuguese and Irish says mother was a barmaid and his dad a sailor...lol. He had all the hellfire of both but has become very mellow with time :)

Thanks Kim, I know what you mean about the hellfire lol, Both my parents were Irish but I was born in the U.K. Hope you're well. Tom.

I love it. My son Patrick was born 3/17, they said the baby was going to be a girl and we picked Patricia as the name. The lil leprechaun fooled us all!

I love wearing green on this day. I am part Irish. I give my students a pinch if they are not wearing green. I think that is a custom developed by Americans, not the Irish! Good entry for the contest, Tom
