Spoiler Alert Best Day Ever
As I’m walking along the bay, smelling fish,
I see fishermen on the sidewalk, lining up at a particular restaurant.
I would stop but my man wouldn't appreciate my lateness.
Maybe I deserve a bite, but I don't enjoy his disapproval.
I'm his woman.
I hope he has a surprise for me.
If he does,
then go on, fish smell.
I don't need to eat anymore
As I live and breathe, there is my college nemesis
Standing in front of me, less than six feet away.
She is not ruining my birthday, or my surprise.
I keep walking, avoiding her eyes, but my heart beats faster.
I am a small-town girl, so not looking at someone is difficult.
Neither of us speak. I do not even glance at her eyes.
Peter is getting his little boat ready for our day voyage.
“Now for your surprise," he announces. Already! I am amazed.
I thought he would propose later, after we get to the island.
Maybe at our favorite little restaurant. In the evening with the stars.
My heart is doing a double time dance.
“I have invited my cousin, Alexa,” he tells me. “She will be right back.”
Alexa! Not Nemesis Alexa.
I stare at him, my mouth wide open.
“What is her last name?” I ask, my heart beating wildly.
“Hello!” Someone I despise says in a singsong voice.
I know my birthday is ruined before I turn and fake-smile.
