Split Wide Open

As I gaze upon my shadow,
it appears to grow a hole
Just where my heart belongs,
morphs a void into my soul
Open to all the elements,
sunlight shines right through
split second after a cannonball
ripped my chest in two

Give back my innards
Return this heart to me
Fill this visceral hole
And leave my body be

Still I look upon my shadow,
now appears to sprout wings
emanating from my loins,
fledge red abstract things
Open to all the elements,
thermal winds raise me high
One moment after shrapnel,
blew my atoms into the sky

Give back my sinews
Return pink mist to me
Feed off your own evil
Go away leave mine be

Now searching for my shadow,
it’s gone can’t be seen
I haven’t got any eyes,
only contours in between
No need for rare elements,
when sublimating the earth
oh come closer afterlife,
from my quanta seed rebirth

Give back my conscious
Return those eyes to me
Let meaning have a purpose
And leave my shadow be

If I only had a heart Edward, or indeed a couple of atoms left after that run in with the cannonball, thank you for the placement, cheers David

David, your writing is so excellent that I was fascinated as I read every word. And y You did a brilliant job portraying the passage from this earth toward the next. This is a conceptual approach to death and your perspective of the dying moments of a person's body. I am ecstatic to realize that you have composed something that is incredibly clever, extensive, and poetic.

High praise Lasaad, thank you for such a comprehensive positive overview of my poem, of course it’s conceptually abstract, using the shadow to illustrate the bigger picture, came perhaps as an afterthought, cheers David

Thank you Tom, who knows what surreal out of body experience may take place in those final milliseconds of life, as for Charon I’ve got a tab going with him, cheers David

David, I was enthralled while reading each line of this fantastic write. It's a glimpse into your thoughts on dying, and a very poignant one. I'm delighted to see you write something other than monoku, so I hope to encourage you to offer more of these insightful poems.

Thank you Jenna, indeed this one is an abstract approach to death, and my interpretation of the microseconds before one expires, even looking into a possible beyond scenario, Thank you for your encouraging words, I do probably need a little time out from monokus, cheers David
