Spare the Rod...

As a child in days gone by
Mother’s rod was swift but sure
Many a weal as time went by
Scarred my skin an ugly blue.

Nagging was the way of life
My mother used to lay the rule
Not a day did I cry
Child abuse, nor reported it at school.

Father’s hands lay thick and strong
A whopping blow upon my hide
On the day I failed at sums
That slap brought answers quick to mind.

Even when I pouted and sulked
Cups or shoes came flying high
Never ever missed the target
That mother’s aim intended to strike.

No words were kind
When I did wrong
No sparing the rod to spoil the child
Discipline the child was a daily song.

Today the cry is child abuse
For which society has no use
Put the child in a foster home
To grow up to be another deviant one.

Is it wise to spare the rod?
Or better yet to talk with the child?
Still mother’s way did well for me
To talk and live like a Jesus child.

Interesting work. When we were children things were different and I can't say if I know if that is good or bad. Sara

i hate to say it; but some parents have abused that Right to the point that the rightious are being accused. And I might add that I was abused on three occasions that brought an undying wrath out of me that lives to this very day. i say; don't spare the rod but don't spoil the child either. jhl

Great rhyme and flow. The world certainly has moved on, some for the better, some for the worse. I have mixed feelings on the subject but only warm feelings towards you. Happy, healthy and wonderful new year dear friend. Thank for all those emails and for your kind support. Love, Shar

All though I love your great poem and certainly to some degree agree. I don't think using the rod works. I was abused by my Mother and it stays with me till this day. A tap on the bottom in a gentle manner is fine, but some people go to far! Just my thoughts! Laura :) Happy New Year!

The rod spared me many pitfalls. I remembered thinking of doing many things as a boy and the idea of what would happen if mommy found scared the you know what out of me...wonderful write.

Yes...how times have changed. Growing up in the age of spankings as we did, seemed to keep us on the straight and narrow. Such a topic of heated debate with today's views...but as you said...mother's way did well for me too...mother's way did well for a lot of kids back then. Mixed with love, it seemed to work. ~ Carrie
