South For Winter
The squirrels have bundled up for the winter
the sun has fought to keep its rays alive
chrysanthemums retire in frustration
the task of simply fighting to survive
The birds have flown
and moved their families southward
where ladies dance in sunshine roasted skins
and the only one that senses cold air coming
is the seagull that is carried by the winds
The cold breeze blows the fragrances of sweet cakes
and the chimney exhales the breath of last years' soot
while the northern winds vacationing in Mexico
are trampled underneath a naked foot.
