The devastation that hail causes can be absolutely disastrous - In Johannesburg about twenty years ago hail hit two suburbs with tennis ball size hail, cars were damaged, all the windows in homes and shops broke, traffic lights were out - it was utter chaos - this all happened in about 2 minutes - your description of a hail storm is perfect!
