I’m not the brightest button in the box and I do not have a first class degree, I’m simply an easy going person just committed to live life to the full Some allude that I’m not a good poet ... tough! I’m honing new skills as a writer, I’ve made progress since I picked up my quill; though Iambic writing’s all Greek to me! Jan, you're in great company as a nonacademic poet – Shakespeare and Dickinson to name but two. I hated english in high school and barely passed. Would you believe my senior year SAT scores indicated I would, with any luck, become a janitor! We all have hidden gifts, dear Jan, the tragedy is not to use them. Best to you. / M

Hi Jan, This poem hits home and I can most definitely relate to it. I feel similar to how you feel about your poetry skills( however you are an amazing poet and person). I really like the line "Schooled by the university of life" I wish you the best of luck luck in the contest:-) Alexis

Thanks Alexis I was a total novice to poetry when i joined I'd never heard of haiku or Iambic pentameter - we didn't learn much poetry at school and what we did learn I detested as I found it so boring and i still don't like the works of Shakespeare to this day, yet I have found my own niche in the poetry world writing silly poems (and some serious ones too) :-) hugs jan xx

Jan, count your lucky stars!!!! I am an academic, unfortunately, though I managed to avoid academia for my first 40 years --- and it is a vast wasteland, and an extremely unfulfilling one at best... Lucky you. Be proud that you're not academic. Best wishes, Gershon

Well written verse Jan, you certainly don't need a a gown and certificate to be a poet. A poet writes from the heart and soul which you do often. Degree from the university of life with honours, yes that's you. Good luck. Tom

aww thanks Tom. 'the university of life' is a phrase my hubby uses, neither of us went to uni but our son excelled and got a first class degree and was top student and got a world record form his dissertation project!:-) I get my on my wits lol:-) hugs Jan xx

Thanks Abdullah - our son was the first person in our families to go to university and our Government paid for most of his tuition fees and he got a first class degree and was top student .. he doesn't get his brains from me lol:-) hugs jan xx

Those who allude you are not a good poet obviously have no idea what a good poet is. Your work is always creative, often humorous and definitely what I would classify as amazing. Who needs form and all of that other poetic jargon, just write what you feel and have fun doing it. That is what makes a good poet. So, what was this poem about...something you are not???? : )
