Some Special Tune

"On the day that you were born, the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true. So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue." From the Carpenters' "Close to You" How I wish I had some special tune recalling romance underneath the moon for one specific moment in my life - but even when I first became a wife, no song was there for my spouse and me. I think and I think. What song might there be? One song there was a long long time ago coming to my mind; it’s lyrics I know by heart! Its meaning held me in its thrall. Most words of songs I barely can recall! The song, a big hit, made me kind of blue. A song for dreamers – it was “Close to You.” So wistful is the woman we hear long to be close to her dream man. It’s a song a day dreamer just like myself would play again and then again back in “the day.” Sweet tinge of angst Karen Carpenter brought to lyrics of the dream of love she sought. That singer died young, but she well knew of the type of young man most young women love - “A dream come true” with “hair of gold” and “eyes of blue” by angels made – a special prize! There was a boy for whom I used to pine like in the lyrics of the song – divine! I’d put my record on and I would hear the line “why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?” Then I would sigh - my teenaged heart so pained that I could cry. No matter what, my dream boy would ignore the girl I was . . . and would be evermore! Aug 4, 2020 for Beth Evans' Same Old Song Poetry Contest

She was the best female voice in music history, well at least in her genre, one of my all time fave singers, so tragic her loss, anyway...back to your poem, you said everything that I imagined a young girl would think about hearing this song a great choice a great write and...a great win!

Fantastic! I'm so happy for you. What a wonderful poem. I can feel your affection, and connection, to this wonderful song, so sweetly sung. What a great tribute, and what a great depth of feelings for the yearnings of our yesteryears. Forever may the tender heart reflect the feelings you impart, the youthful yearnings day by day, reflected in the songs you play, close to you, Andrea!

I left you a comment here, but it must have been deleted by the Soup gremlins. I love the Carpenters and this song in particular. It was ubiquitous on early 70's radio. What a voice Karen had, and played the drums too. Gone too .soon. Oh, by the way, great poem! Hope it wins for you ~ John

"Close to you" certainly exposed the joy of first love which "Annie's Song" answered, but Dolly Parton's, "I will always love you" always stopped traffic on the Reservation. It seemed everyone's eyes glazed over as if they were transported to another place and time. Not at all surprising that you have reached back to a time when there was more love in this world! Aloha! I wished I had thought of, "Old flames can't hold a candle to you!" which is as clever as, "If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" so I keep reading in search of inspiration! Aloha! Rico

The song I like most is "Annie's Song" by John Denver. He died way too young too. In a plane crash. Loved this poem Andrea. It's always a pleasure to read for you. God Bless, JB

I loved that song and john Denver. What an amazing song writer. When i learned guitar in my 40's, my teacher gave me lots of his songs to learn different strums to. Now I can't even remember how to play guitar yet I practiced faithfully with it for two years and I had three books filled with songs that I practiced!

I think "Close to You" would be a great song choice for you and your hubby, Andrea. Karen Carpenter was an amazing talent. (Daver loved her voice too.) John and I had two songs -- "Your Song" by Elton John and "Alone Again, Naturally." Best wishes in the contest. Hugs, Carolyn

Carolyn, it sounds weird to say our song was Your Song, but it was our song too back in the day.
