So Where Is It Now

so where is it now,
that burst of loud birdsong
so happy and cheerful, once
contained in your small breast?

where is that sunshine,
your unerring warmth and light
that flooded everything
you saw and touched?

who stole that beautiful smile,
those bright eyes,
that energy deep within you,
the star that shone?

what happened to cloud up
the brilliant clarity and wisdom
that you had of life
and the trust in good things?

did you think too much
of things to come?
of dark fears too many?
or of things passing?
