Notes About The Poem

So Sad, This Memory
Wallflowers with their mournful faces raised,
and others too, asleep with heads hung low,
are seen against the wall, alone and dazed...
poor wallflowers all stationed in a row.
And others too, asleep with heads hung low;
stems drooping, bent and twisted, on display.
Poor wallflowers all stationed in a row,
like potted, faded plants, no role to play.
Stems drooping, bent and twisted, on display;
they come and go, have learned to acquiesce.
Like potted, faded plants, no role to play;
those weak and wilted flowers in distress.
They come and go, have learned to acquiesce;
in old, worn wheelchairs, sit discouraged souls.
Those weak and wilted flowers in distress,
sit facing death; they know there are no goals.
In old, worn wheelchairs, sit discouraged souls;
are seen against the wall, alone and dazed.
Sit facing death, they know there are no goals.
Wallflowers with their mournful faces raised.

I wrote about this sad memory, which
was intensely frozen in my mind
when I visited a local nursing home.
