SNOWGLOBE MEMORIES

4th PLACE : PREMIER CONTEST

It’s only a matter of time when I’ll stop shaking my snowglobe so tiny shiny, a glassy Christmas gift from Aunt Sally, brown paper wrapping tied with silvery ribbon, a note saying : “When wings spread over all Oceans”

What did Aunt Sally mean ? Inside my globe a little boat sailed on a frozen sea below two sparkling stars, one gold, one silver, no bird with wings. White flakes in winter’s embrace danced ‘The Nutcracker’.

“Dear SnowGlobe Stars”, said I as lil’ child : “Are you King Arthur and Lady Guinevere ? What did Aunt Sally mean with delicate note keen ?” ~ No reply from stars, flakes or blue boat.
I asked Sis who replied, “Aunty means when you stop asking questions obscene !”

I shook my magical snowglobe, shake, shake.
Star Twins touched, flew up with lacy flakes, glittering so safe. I wished I were them, not needing to ponder questions about own minuscule scene.
I asked Mom about note who replied : “Patience is highest virtue, wait until stars reply.”

Itsy-bitsy spherical glass snowglobe, flakes lying tranquil, watched me skipping to petite nursery teacher to ask same question. Pouting, she whispered, “Your mind’s agitated, let stars fly around without any hatred.”
Finally, I asked Dad, who replied : “Let’s go
skate !”

Over many years my snowglobe ball went from mantelpiece onto dressing table, finally landing in bottom chest drawer, accompanied by Aunty’s note. Into high school snowglobe occasionally received a shaking greet, “Hello, King Arthur and Lady Guinevere !”

One biting winter’s day, English tutor asked for a poem : First words needed to be : “when wings spread…”
Memory Flash ! Aunty’s string of words !

I grabbed little snowglobe out of chest drawer, shook it violently, looked for Aunty’s note, somewhere, where ?! There it lay in dim corner, still as a folded praying mantis.

King Arthur with Lady Guinevere in their lil’ boat delivered this verse :
when wings spread over all Oceans
humans will flow in harmonious motion
no sorrow will there be in tomorrows
           it’s only a matter of Love’s bravado’s

         fly fitful near fears far
         hear faithful doves la-la
what is hard will soften, dear
         stars twinkling in motion
         no lil’ boats in commotion

memories fade not
each shake of snowglobe rings true ~
aunt’s note freedom flaked
