Long before lips lock, there is the very first time when eyes first lock. What stories they tell, and what moves they make! I sought to capture that electric moment in this poem.

When through a bustling crowd Loving eyes hew a tunnel Their sweet messages to exchange And two strangers dumb and numb with love Suddenly want to kiss but not with their lips, To hug but not with their arms, And to confess love but not with their tongues Whilst their wary tongues, lips, and arms shed their numbing coats of ice— It is then that their flaming eyes Must reach across the thawing ice and by one look plant a kiss; and another a hug; and yet another a confession. For between smitten strangers too timid to touch, A loving look makes the softest kiss, A longing look the warmest hug, And a daring look the loudest confession of love.

I always wondered if that amorous look exists in the eyes or it is something in the mind. That is, would an onlooker see the same look in the eyes of the lovebirds? Thanks for your kind words, Sara!

Yes, that first look, which leads to lifetime commitment. My husband says that when we first shook hands, he knew. It took me a little longer, but the spark was there!

62 years! That's remarkable and a worthy subject for celebratory poetry. Lord bless you with many more years together.

It has lasted almost 62 years for us. Guess you could call that a lifetime spark.

Hello Cona! Delighted to find someone to whom the sentiment expressed rings a bell. I wish that look would last the whole life of a relationship.
