Small Word

Small word, two letters,
"if"--how many innuendoes
and emotions it can evoke,
just by tone of voice.
"If you don't go to class,"
"if you succumb to drugs,"
"if you don't take that job,"
"if you refuse to move,"
negatives that threaten and punish.
If you graduate, good money,
if you do a favor, expect a reward;'
if you introduce me to him,
you can borrow my fur coat;
if you baby-sit for Katy
she'll have food for her two kids.
And if I look within
seeking my own life's needs,
I'll pray and ponder
knowing that simplicity is best.
