Notes About The Poem

Slip Me Five

Our holiday family gatherings instill traditional values and are totally itchin’
What we do the day after Thanksgiving is give mom a break from the kitchen
We head out to our favorite spot, “The Poop Deck” a rock’n café that’s coolsville
In Dad’s flip flop, we take the 5 South Highway and over the Santa Monica, S hill

People believe the reason for the crazy name, is because it’s where seagull’s poo
Gosh, it’s a nautical term for upper deck, like a ship, on the ocean off Malibu
Don’t be square Dad, this tank goes faster than twenty, heavens to murgatroyd!
A real drag when we finally got there, I got a spanking; Dad was super annoyed

flip top - a car with a convertible top*
Murgatroyd-A humorous alteration of the idiom "heavens to Betsy"
(Poetry left out the letter B on the first line)

An high-five for this fun write, Anaya. Brings back memories when I lived in Ca. when I was 21. (I got mugged on Santa Monica Blvd.) Good thing I only had twenty dollars on me...scary though. Best wishes in the contest...Hugs

Lol, Eliz, I found that if you wrangle with words a bit, they may pass. I never thought of bitch'n, as a bad word, but they have a point. Happy Holidays! :)

Very clever and a bit of fun, hey? (They let you say the kind of deck but won't let me mention it!) Elizabeth

It is fair to say that 1950's slang was a vernacular that became a primal language for teenagers who sought independence and liberation while also continuing to reflect the traditional values and lifestyle of the times.

Oh yes! The winds of change ushered in the 1950s as a decade of conservatism, complacency and contentment in the great American society. The slang of the 1950s reflected the mood of the decade.

Thank you, Evelyn. I saw the picture and my mind went swirling with those surf n turf beach days and what it would've been like. Glad you enjoyed!

LOL, I had to reset it and run it through again!! It didn't work out with the word " Bitch'n" 1st line, I settled for "itchin'" and explained it. Glad you came back Tom. Happy Holidays! ;D
