Slightly Off the Grid

Time to look Look closely at the backward forward thinking me Consumed by my own consumption Hybrid driving wanabe Thinking I'm thinking of others when it's all about me Big house with some solar panels Seventy two inch plazma TV with over Two Hundred Channels All the latest gadgets and owners manuals On earth day I feel good because I light some candles Sure I recycle trying my best Yet in the end I don't consume any less Attracted to labels I like my "Three Leaves" and "Guess" I have the right lingo and know how to dress You'll see me riding my bike just about every where I go Five grand of carbon fibre all part of the show I expound on the enviroment so you will know what I know I talk about gardening but I don't own a hoe It's all about the illusion I like the idea of green drinking ethical coffee at the bean scene I like the attention all the conversations I use inuendo and insinuations Yet travel on a big fuel guzzling plane to fabulous soon to be spoiled destinations!

Love the insightfulness of this poem. . . and how the rhymes fall into place. Just think of all the paper we're saving while still showing our poetry to potentially millions or thousands or I mean hundreds of people!

Excellent Penn, dear friend!!!.. I too like my comforts, but I think our body, mind and spirit would be much improved with less conveniences not to mention the earth.. I often wish I had been born in much earlier times and avoided the computer age.......... Just my thought, but it seems to me that those who rant the loudest, from famous podiums, waste the most.. Do as I say, not as I do... Hugs, dear friend... Arlene

If we sell all our wasteful property and live without the modern comforts who profits? Sure we should not over indulge but we must understand that electricity, light and advanced means of communication should not be cast aside in favor of going back to savage times. Great write my friend. I STILL want to keep my microwave!

I guess potentially our children would benifit. I am not suggesting we go back to the stone age however I think it is important that we examine our consumption. We live in a disposable society and people's dissatisfaction is on the increase. We are finding that consumerism has not made us any happier. The so called increase in communication has left us more isolated.

This poem is excellently done, and I believe in getting off the grid every once in a while because it makes one appreciate all we have in the modern world of today when we get back on but it also teaching us so much about ourselves also, nicely done here my friend, cheri

Love it! It makes us think about what we are doing behind the smoke, illusion and mirrors. Sometimes it is easier than we think to give up the comforts. For several years I lived on a mountain completely off the grid. It was hard work but I loved every minute. Health and family concerns made us return to 'civilization'.

I was sure this was about David Suzuki! Then I realized it cant be, he has MANY big houses!! Here's some food for thought, I know most poets would never print a poem, its not environmentally friendly to do so, however if one did, using century Gothic font over say Ariel, would save you over 30% in ink and be better for the environment, loved this poem Richard A7

As the old saying goes, or it is a song lyric, "Do what you have to do." I live in a one room shack I call The Hovel, and I do not envy the rich and how they live their lives are one iota. I also do not much care for the politically correct within our culture. I'm just me, as you are just you.

Hi Eileen, I must admit, I personally do far to little for the cause of the enviroment.

Sarcasm at its best! A universal truth for those who possess and try to appear but not to be! All this is fine for to fool our fellow humans BUT God sees the intentions and judges us accordingly for we cannot hide anything from HIM no matter how smart we think we are! A HUGE 7 for this masterpiece of SARCASM, dear Richard!

Sounds like every other middle class american to me!!I really admire the countries that promote recycling and things like that. I think as long as people are not required to do things for the environment, those thing simply won't ever be addressed. Very thought provoking, Richard.

Oh if only, the world market force driven, and we seem to follow suit, but this is so good,,at least someone (you) is pointing us in the right direction...if it is in your poetry, it is in your heart and mind...

In reality there are many who are concerned about the enviroment but taking care of their families takes priority. The oil industry in Alberta Canada is a good example of that.

Ahh I like it. "I talk about gardening but I don't own a hoe" there are so many out there, probably me included who are hypocrites one way or another. Your poem was fun to read, serious yet with a comical edge that makes you awesome my friend. Your poetry makes me smile :) :)

I am presenting at the inspired Word Cafe in a couple of weeks so I had to come up with something for the getting of the Grid Theme. I'm pleased at your reaction Casarah, I hope the audience will like it too.
