Notes About The Poem

Sleepless Nights - SK

Another night of frayed nerves like an unraveled thread
Sleep eludes me once more as I fidget on wrinkled sheets
I'm annoyed at the pensive thoughts roving in my head
as I hear the increasing rhythm echoing in my heartbeats

The candle flame is still burning with a soft golden glow
If only my eyes would close that I might sleep until dawn,
I would rise and welcome the warmth of sunlight's flow,
open shuttered windows where drapes are tightly drawn

Somehow, I must navigate through each turbulent night
and find a threshold to cross where I can find some peace.
Even shadows are asleep beyond the flickering candlelight
Would that I could find tranquility in that kind of release.

It continues in these times of quiet hours of early morn
when with sleep deprived eyes, I pick up my pen and write
rhyming verse after verse in which I chastise and I scorn
my infernal, internal nemesis that robs me of sleep at night

I wanted to personally thank you for the participating in my contest and say congratulations to you on your name being on the winners' list. I have gotten up in the middle of the night and write and at times get up early in the morning so I can write because I'm not sleeping very well anyway. Way to go in writing this one. Sara K

Thank you for adding my poem to your winning list, Sara. You know very well the bane of our existence when sleep evades us, but that time is spent writing instead. Sometimes it's a fair trade, sometimes it's not.

I should read more of your poems, but rhyming is almost beyond me. I don't suffer from sleepless nights, but I wake up too early these days. Darn heels hurt me too much.

We of a certain age can relate to this one Lin, a lifetime of memories rushing around in your head both good and bad. Tom

I totally relate to this one. Usually, though, I can get to sleep by putting TV really low and listening to it with my eyes closed. I think that blocks me from focusing on my own racing thoughts, which keep me awake. I wake up a few times during the night, but I am needing to use my sleeping pills less than before. Good luck with insomnia. Sara will really relate to this one in her contest!

Sleepless but ambitious, your poem is a hearty success even through half-open eyes. Good luck with the contest.

Ah linnersz, I know this feeling so well, sometimes I sleep too much and sometimes i walk through life as an insomniac, and iv seen and heard of so many stories where sleep feels like a task for some. Youv expressed so well and I absolutely love the word weaving here! Such profound rhymes too! And I especially love the way youv written the ending. I think many poets can resonate with that feeling. I write the most intense at 3am! Pleasure reading you. Sending you light always

Writers are driven...all artists, are wonderfully, fearfully driven. The fuel of creativity burns, hotly, brightly -- glaring and disturbing. Tears are the sacrifice, sleep is the sacrifice, sometimes even sanity. This is brilliant poetry, Lin. You get a FAV!

Dear Lin, Oh my, a very familiar world to me where the mind just won’t settle and the night stretches longer than it should. I like how you let the candlelight become a kind of companion, soft but not quite enough to calm the restlessness. I feel exactly the same way, where the pen becomes the only way through those hours, it feels true to anyone who’s ever written their way out of a sleepless spell. Amen my Sister, Blessings, Daniel
