Notes About The Poem

Sister Dorothea

My lasting memories
of Dorothea, still live on-
since that day in fourth grade,
when she stopped by my desk
and saw my artwork-
so overjoyed and clearly
quite amazed
that I could draw that way.

This Nun- our new art teacher,
bent down, looked at me,
and lovingly whispered,
"Dear, you are an artist!"
Throughout my years
in Catholic grammar school-
this kind teacher,
a gift of God- honed my skills.

The treasured memories
of her driving force that helped
my young potential grow-
and constant mentoring
that kept my interest strong,
have never gone away.
This gift of God-
I was- and am- so thankful for.
