Notes About The Poem

Simple Twists of Draconian State

OK, maybe you see a similarity in rhyme scheme to a certain Bob Dylan song (lol).

Put me in a prison cell.
Go ahead, sentence me to Hell.
Squash whoever might rebel.
You decide what's right.
After all, you've got the might.
There is no debate
in a twisted, draconian state.

Will I have any friends,
a job, or the means and ends?
If I say the right thing, it depends.
What do my people expect?
I must remember to be correct
or else I will get my tribe's hate
in the invisible draconian state.

I've been programmed. I've been led.
Who put those voices in my head?
My parents' truth or DNA instead?
My brain follows every order,
just like a tape recorder,
playing morning until it's late,
it's my minds' draconian state.

Every dendrite 'n axon's notion
follows Newton's laws of motion.
Now it dictates, "jump in the ocean".
I guess that's the last straw.
I can't break Newton's law.
It would not equate
in this physical draconian state.

Good news, everyone, I fell in love,
I heard the cooing of the dove,
and for reasons specified thereof,
I must do crazy things
like I'm pulled by puppet strings.
Don't you think it's great
to fall in this most draconian state.

I would differ from the interpretation of the last two lines by the commenters below. I'd go elsewhere with the lines; I think they fit in quite well with the overall theme and tone. ~ Erstwhile Critic

Thanks, Gershon! You may be too young to remember the song Simple Twist of Fate, the rhyme scheme (and I think the meter - though meter is something I don't fully grasp) is the same as that song...but of course the words are totally unrelated. I'm not quite sure why I chose to use that - I guess because I like the song.

love as a draconian state...how interesting. Your approach is much lighter than my poem. Best wishes with the contest!
