Silent Letters & Loud Contradictions
Silent Letters & Loud Contradictions
I learned about silent letters today,
and honestly…
I feel personally attacked.
Why is there a K in knife
if the damn thing is too shy to speak?
Why is there a W in write
when it clearly contributes absolutely nothing?
And P in psychology?
Buddy, if you're going to be silent,
you could at least pay rent.
Then we have oxymorons
two words standing together
that make absolutely no sense.
Jumbo shrimp.
Seriously?
That's like calling a
tiny giant
or a pretty ugly
or a working vacation.
Then there's organized chaos,
which I personally understand
because that's basically
my entire life.
Seriously funny.
Awfully good.
Pretty terrible.
Random order.
And my personal favorite:
"I'm fine."
Two words.
One enormous lie.
English is apparently
just a language built
by people who got bored
and decided,
"Let's make some letters silent,
put opposites together,
and see if everyone else
can figure this out."
So here I am
quietly questioning
why queue needs five letters
to make one damn sound,
while simultaneously
trying to maintain
my organized chaos,
enjoy my working vacation,
and have a little seriously funny
mental breakdown.
English isn't hard.
English is just
a beautiful disaster
with deafening silence,
bittersweet happiness,
and a pretty ugly attitude.
And honestly?
I'm beginning to think
the silent letters
aren't the only ones
who have nothing useful to say.
