She'D Lost Her Tomorrow

Each day she sat
upon her nest
lovingly nurturing
her unborn chicks
in burning sunshine
she gasped for air
her dedication
beyond compare

Yesterday
a gale ~ a gust
   just took her nest
      blew it away

Her eggs ~ Her chicks
   were now all gone

and looking on
all I could hear
was total panic
borne in her cries
   as slowly
      tears welled in my eyes

This beautiful mother
had lost her eggs
in the blink of an eye
unborn now gone
   and she’s left wondering
      Why…

Head held low
surveying the scene
her pitiful cries
   of what might have been

For in her grief
beyond belief
I witnessed
her sorrow
   she’d lost her tomorrow

My tears now flowed
at Natures brutality
   sadly beginning to face reality

Sweet black backed gull
I pray one day
   you may
      be blessed in time
           ~
For I feel your loss
  so deeply
     as if your loss
      ‘twere mine...

Yes it was awful to see this Heidi it really upset me, after watching her sitting in the heat of the sun for a couple of weeks, she had been so attentive and caring and now she looked puzzled and perplexed wondering how that had happened? Take good care my friend. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Beautiful and so sad! In the USs, they slaughters millions of farm animals. I wanted to cry. Not for food. There is no storage for bodies... Best in contest. The Two of Us )))

To the Two of You ~ I thank you sweet girls ~ it was such a sad sight to see her looking around and making pitiful sounds of distress and there were only a few days to go before they were due to hatch... nature can be cruel at times. With kindest thoughts Ann xx

Ann, this poem is a winner - in any contest, and I am glad of your win. "in the blink of an eye unborn now gone and she’s left wondering Why…" - so telling. So heartfelt and sad, around Mother's Day too. Great one, my friend.

Many thanks dear Caren, yes I was devastated to see her nest, with three dark brown eggs in, had been blown away, possibly when she got off it to stretch her legs - have soupmailed you Caren. With kindest thoughts Ann xx
