She Told Me

She told me
about the wasting of days
and nights feeding lies to herself.
Powders like coffins
set end to end,
sucking broken bodies
up her nose.
That's what she told me.
But
she couldn't say why
live in a suffering death house
or send her mind
to a dead-end place,
why unravel the knitted
life of good things.
She never told me that.

Madeleine, this piece is so powerful and asks the questions we want to ask; WHY?? My life has been touched in devastating ways by substance addictions. It is a horrible plaugue on our society. Thank you for this VERY relevant write. Donna G.

The imagery is great and allows the reader to take in and appreciate the narrative without feeling preached to. The line 'Powders like coffins' I have to admit, I didn't understand, though I guess you mean lined up. I love the way that you break the narrative with 'That's what she told me.' I don't know if the poem needs to be broken into stazas at that point (one stanza, then that line, then another stanza?). But a great piece of powerful imagery.

So sad. Excellent poetry. I hope she's still around and tells you why, to possibly help change things for the better. Good luck to her. Love, Shar
