Shakespeare and Me

Shakespeare and me
   just didn't agree
Neither did reading
   'great poetry'

The classics I spurned
   and when they were finished
     did happily burn

Now that I'm older
   their words still smolder
They've lit quite a fire
   deep inside me

Those sonnets of his carry eternal truths! I adore Shakespeare,,his depth into man! My grandson has seen his lighter plays and loves them. Life is far from a joke of a cartoon or a barrel full of hee-haws. But he has humor too. In River Forest, you bet we learned Shakespeare...ah~ those great days in Illinois..Panagiota

I like the cadence of Shakespeare's works, and the Englishness of it, but I could not read it as a regular diet after discovering Dr. Seuss, and Shel Silverstein for I think poetry should be fun, not "work" to read. When I reached college and discovered Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Kubla Khan - it was over. He is my ultimate favorite! My mind leapt around when I was reading this one, Mr. Wolf so thank you for that!

Found it boring in my youth then I saw the light. When I go to Stratford on Avon his house is always full of tourists. Tom. I live about 25 mins away. .

Sounds familiar, … and I am happy for you, that you live so close to Stratford on Avon. Sounds like a dream to me. I live that close to---convicted aldermen. LOL. Best wishes, Gershon

Yes, Arturo. It's a light of sort, a beacon from a lighthouse across the oceans of time. Thank you for your wonderful comment. Best wishes, Gershon

Isn’t that the truth! The one I remember from childhood was “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson. And of course the poetic Psalm 23 which I memorized in school. One more...Trees by Joyce Kilmer

Sounds like curricula didn't differ that much back in those days --- you know a decade or so ago. (LOL). I too liked Richard Cory, knew Psalm 23 (but not from public school), and HATED 'Trees.' Used to recite it holding my nose. (My FAVE was 'Casey at the Bat.') As for Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth, et al., FERSHTUNK! I can hardly believe I'm the same person... As time goes by... :) gw

to the bargain book stores man... quick as you can...for it riles them to believe that you see past your sleeves of present culture...into the past...to the well of what lasts...a changing space where-in time is all that remains constant...sorry for all the words but oldt stuff has always been a passion...

Shakespeare will live on eternally, don't worry. He's made it this far (400 years plus). :) gw

Sure made me smile GW, Shakespeare leaves me cold and I struggle writing sonnets:-) Amazingly he did write some bawdy plays like Measure for Measure so I guess I am in good company for writing this style but of course i could never compete with the bard lol:-) hugs Jan xx

Hey, even plays like Hamlet and Caesar have 'interesting,' semi-bawdy first scenes (in order to please the early-arrivers, who were mostly common people)… As for competing with the Bard -- ha, ha, ha, ha, ha... Let's not go there. He was one in 10 billion. No one like him before or since, as I've come to appreciate. Probably wouldn't have lasted on Poetry Soup though. LOL. :) gw
