Shades of Yesterday
"Fragments and crumbs of life, all the little pieces"
John Ruskin 1853
are held in my dim lit realm of shades
from yesterday
Some worthy of remembering
Some lost forever
Each moment lived in accordance to the times
Whether running reckless through childhood
struggling to fit in to unknown worlds
that seemed so distant
To the age of youthful exuberance
when girls found me interesting
Until I wasn't
The lost decade of athletic endevors
which became a world of its own
With its own rules
Contracts signed, then tossed away like trash
from injury
Left to ask "What now?"
The years of sexual pursuit, for pursuit's sake
which left love wanting
from the welcomed joy of fleeting satisfaction
to the unwelcomed sadness from the last kiss of romances
that gave birth to the loneliness of silence
which cradled me when weary
from dreams once filled with color
that turned to black and white
before leaving a hole in my soul
from being toppled by winds of illusion
Until I learned how to stand
Reborn from the fragments eaten along the way
As I disappear into the night
I won't look back
It's a world where I have already been
