Severence from the union

I will sever you in three years
So he conspires across time
You come for me every ten years
You came for me in the city of angels
When I was in third grade
Only I and no one else gets hurt?
You came for me in Pomona
Where Japs lost their farms
A razor blade in my pocket
What do you know about me since?
You were on the ledge atop a brownstone
Thirty years ago, with rum-stained lips
We ended up in New Mexico
You came for me in San Francisco
We painting a black hole closing
You thought having a child would end you
You broke up our civil family instead
She sent us like a Nazi scurrying
Now, you still attempt to sever me
Can’t North and South be civil?
You demand wine and exclusive company
Even if our son comes to crash the party
I’ll sever you to the demilitarized zone
The moment I drink you in, I’m no more
I’ll make you ashamed of my fears
As you defect to libations, welcoming
I’ll leave you in your misery unquenched
Like a careless mother letting a child drink
Onlookers at Costco see his tantrum blue
Three more years till a decade
I feel the pressure building
Clozapine or ketamine or lithium?
Nothing will metabolize my hatred of you
So, I'll throw ourselves down a hole
Some fall gracefully down a well
Some hit every brick misplaced
There is no division in gravity
That separates a father from a child
No way to divide the dropped and dropper
When the water and ground come for us
Sever with scissors, cutting the air and rain
But the cries from above rain down tears
Down the well at the Mason-Dixon line
Ring like the Gettysburg address
Four scores across my wrist
And three years to go till the decade is up
If I make it across, it’ll be the first time
I no longer want to burn the nation
All because of a baby befriending sin
Like contraband from heaven descending
The Berlin Airlift showers us with chocolates
Till we build the Berlin Wall or the 38th parallel
Respecting your need to deconstruct
There are babies and kittens where you are
Genocide hurts Germans for decades ahead
But, the more we stay within line
The more polarized we become
Under one nation, it’s bound to be an uncivil war
Let’s make Hwangap the year of reconstruction
We have three more years to make amends
My son will be in 10th grade since the last
I’ll be sixty then. thirty each for me and you
How much time is wasted warring
Bearing only one fruit
Crying, enough
We are a plurality
Severed only in mind
Aye, there’s the rub
Awakened or a dream
My psychosis counting
Rubbing a stick
Hoping for a fire
Unless we’re one nation
Embraced regardless
Under one God
His Son changing all
Struggling to be two
Yet always one
Win me over
Goodness severed
Bring on the chase
Like us to the stars
Or so it seems

Powerful, fascinating, dark yet hopeful. I had to really concentrate reading this one. I like how you weave history into poem moving forward & backwards in time & how you flip personal with societal & vice versa. So many wrenching lines. ThkU for sharing. Well done, Triny.

Thank you, Jerry. Let's hope 2026 brings a little more peace in our heads and out of our heads in the world we live in. If powerful comes from honesty, honestly, I am sincerely humbled.
