Sending Students To the Slaughter

I’m looking to a future that I know does not exist ….while being told I need to study on
But the bullets do the talking as my classmates run for cover
Never knowing if this might be their final day

The ringing in my ears no longer comes from the class bells
But instead comes from the horrid screams echoing down the halls.

I listen as survivors say “ it wasn’t me this time”
As they slowly wipe the blood away….
from the bottom of their shoes

I no longer know what to say or do for fear someone will be offended
When all I really want is to make it home alive

I’m constantly being bombarded from the left and from the right….
Both of them telling me which side is the guilty one

I’m told that it’s important to know about the past …..all while calculating percentages and reading Shakespeare’s last

But I’ve seen cows in cattle yards that stand a better chance than me
As we’re all sent off to slaughter in this society
