Seemingly Overnight
Spring starts with icicles dripping,
as tepid rays of sunshine warm the air.
And city cars are abandoned for bicycles
as temperatures rise
from freezing to mild.
Spring's warmth triggers
tulips, daffodils, and snowdrops
to poke their heads through the thawed ground,
seemingly overnight.
And from blades of grass to emerald leaves,
Nature inks the landscape
in multiple shades of green.
Suddenly, spectacular colors emerge;
scarlets, pinks, yellows, blues, and purples,
are but a few gleaned from Spring's palette.
The twittering songbirds have all returned,
tweeting tunes that decry the length of Winter's rule.
And a lune's eerie, haunting call
once more echoes across the northern lakes.
For the ice-free waters welcomed them back
when Winter gave way to Spring.
