Notes About The Poem
The Unrepeatable Moment, Sponsor: Daniel Henry Rogers
Seated on Teal Stairs
Like an ethereal wind swept through the doorway.
I don’t remember answering.
I remember her words, “We are eloping,”
and she blew past my dropped jaw and big eyes;
I don’t remember sitting down,
I just remember being there.
The white dress in plastic; yes, the dress
like a baby being taken away.
My baby letting me in, first,
on the secret that would wind its way
through the family, one by one.
I don’t remember if she was alone
or if her fiancé was with her.
The stairs in full bloom, a little green,
a little blue, five steps; a quick decision.
Alone, with my thoughts
and as the wind changes direction;
there was the hug; was there
an ‘I’m sorry…’ I have no idea.
She let me in, as I let her in;
I wasn’t completely left out -
left out of the party.
~ ~ ~
I chose this moment that stands out in time. My eldest was married twice, my middle child was married in Guam (watched a video) and my youngest eloped. Life doesn’t always give you the perfect moments, yet they are unforgettable. The first line was the hardest to write as I felt as if I was holding my breath through the entire write, reliving the freeze frame. I changed the 1st line with its “cold wind,” to ethereal; and my 4th line with its “surprised look” to a more exact image. After my daughter left, I went to church. I was sitting in a chair telling a friend, and it was then that I burst into tears. Of course, I got over it; or did I?
